The latest base-rak onto which all the other kit now fits. |
Logic - why bak-rak is like it is. We first produced a bak-rak 25 years ago. The kids were toddlers and we had the usual kiddy kit that wouldn't fit in the car. It wasn't bak-rak then. It was a scruffy combination of angle iron and an old tow-hitch. But it worked well and everyone who saw it wanted one, but a 'nice one'. Visiting Canada and the US we saw many different designs - but their tow-ball standard is different, and they were built for huge 4x4's with small girders and angle iron. They wouldn't translate to the European market, though some of the ideas may. For a few hours amusement search on 'vehicle racks' and admire the barbecues, ox-roasts and ice cream stands that adorn the US rear rack business. The objective was for a flexible rack that would fit and be usable on even the smallest of cars . Having owned roof-racks, roof boxes, bike racks and trailers we have got fed up with rust and rot and split plastic. They never repair properly. And the battle of loading roof boxes and trying to reverse small trailers is the stuff of nightmares. So our design brief for bak-rak was for a lightweight rack with flexibility to use as the basis for carrying - well....anything! Our original design was all laser-cut stainless sheet TIG welded together. It looked great, but pricing it up, no-one was going to pay that much. And it wasn't that lightweight either. The laser-cut mounting parts continued, but using box-section to get maximum stiffness for minimum weight. Bends at the corners maintain strength and look good. The locking hand wheel to fix bak-rak in position and to the vehicle represents a compromise between cost and convenience. However we have made sure there is anchorage for a serious U-lock so that valuables can be properly chained down. Following-on from the original bak-rak there are a series of accessories ... to carry......anything! We have also developed a series of universal brackets to allow you to mount any specific item onto your bak-rak. This could range from locking a generator onto the rack to creating a second level - for example with skis mounted over the top of your luggage. The new bak-rak family recently introduced uses a new patent mounting to fit all tow-balls but using a modular build to allow you to create any sort of rack to match your own carrying needs. And if other people or companies want to use the central mount to produce specialist carrying kit - from winches to watches - then we will be happy to offer them any help we can - we would just like to be able to offer the resulting products to our customers as a spin-off. Or if you have ideas on things you need to carry - but there is nothing to do it on the market - then share those needs with us and we will see what we can do!! We have already developed carriers for a winch, a vice, a spare-wheel and are working on boxes and bags a removable step and a specific generator carrier. So that is how we have got to the bak-rak you see now. We have to say thanks for input on the design side from Warwick University Manufacturing centre and for advice and assistance from Coventry and Nottingham Trent universities. The bak-rak team.
